One of my biggest pet peeves is slow-walking. You know the type: people that move with such lethargy they are almost going backwards, or those who stop abruptly mid-sidewalk and change direction, regardless of those behind them, then there are people who insist on walking two or three abreast, oblivious to the harried, hurried souls behind them. I dream of the day when Vineyard Haven finally installs two-story sidewalks, with the upper level dedicated to people walking at a brisk pace, and the bottom dedicated to those who see shuffling as the most effective means of locomotion.

During the holidays though, when my progress is stalled by people struggling to maneuver with both hands full of bags from local shops, I could not be happier. It’s a wonderful sight to see such support of our local economy and community. The Island economy has always been frangible and is now more than ever. Any patronage we can give to our shopkeeper neighbors and friends is invaluable.

All that said, I freely admit to shopping online. It is incredibly convenient and almost anything can be sought, bought and delivered in a matter of days. But there is no soul in virtual shopping carts; brick and mortar shopping will always be tops. Part of the ritual of the holidays is going out on crisp, December days and strolling from shop to shop. And while the Internet may have All The Things, finding them is another matter. There are few places that offer such an eclectic selection of gifts and goods like the Vineyard and I’ve never had any trouble finding a gift for everyone on my list here. The only trouble I have is the discipline to buy gifts for other people, not for myself.

So I encourage everyone to shop locally as much as they can. And in doing so, continue to support our economy and also, avoid the stress, panic and calamity of shopping off-Island and the isolation of point and click shopping.

This Thursday, December 15, the Tisbury Business Association is holding its third annual Friends and Family Night in Vineyard Haven. It is a great night of festivities and the perfect time to get away from the computer and support local shops. See you there.

The magic of the holidays has again arrived on the Island. This is the season of friends and family; hot chocolate and comfy sweaters. The Island is full of good cheer and it is truly a wonderful time to visit. Visitors and residents alike revel in the tranquility, the crisp winter days and the quiet, clear nights filled with stars. And while the frenetic pace of summer may have slackened, the Island is still bustling. Many of the Island’s shops and restaurants are open for the holidays, with great gifts to be found and lots of comfort food to be had for those chilly winter evenings. This season, Zephrus Executive Chef Ben deForest is offering a spectacular menu, with many ingredients sourced from Island farms and featuring both weekly and nightly specials.

New Year’s is always an occasion on the Vineyard and especially at Mansion House. Ring it in right with our New Year’s Eve menu, featuring a champagne toast at midnight.

And while the holidays are a wondrous time, they can also be…stressful. Come decompress at the Mansion House and escape the hustle with a relaxing treatment at our award winning Day Spa, then curl up in your room with a cup of tea or take a long respite in the hot tub or our heated pool. Rooms start at just $99 and don’t forget to check our specials page for great deals.

It may be the so-called “off-season” on the Island but here is still plenty to see and to do. Bundle up and explore the Island with a new perspective; walk a beach in quiet solitude and marvel at the smooth sand, devoid of any footprints. Or hike one of the dozens of trails on Island and experience the stunning vistas of blue sky. And then there are the decorations! Islanders go all out for the holidays; shop windows are resplendent with Christmas lights and holiday displays. And once darkness falls, the landscape comes alight with fantastic Christmas lights. A can’t miss is the Gatchell family Christmas display, featuring over 20,000 lights and animated Christmas displays. Just don’t ask them what the electric bill runs. Christmas in Edgartown is another annual holiday tradition, an entire week of holiday activities, craft shows, caroling and plenty of hot chocolate.

Don your best holiday sweater and come share the season with us at the Mansion House.
