Spring is here on the Vineyard. We asked the staff, all year-round Islanders, what they like to do now that the shovels are shelved.
Assistant Front Desk Manager Philip, who was in Boston since 2009, and recently returned to Mansion House, is glad to trade the sidewalks for beach walks. Phil is skipping stones with his son, three-year old Landon, while hunting for buried treasure at nearby Eastville Beach. “I loved Boston, but really missed all the Island has to offer and the fun I had at Mansion House. I’d forgotten how beautiful it is when everything starts to bloom.” This year will also mark Landon’s first time riding the Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs, the oldest operating carousel in North America.
Front Desk Manager Bud plays golf, 9 months a year, at Farm Neck, with a dedicated group of friends. When younger guests visit he trades his driver for a putter and puts in a round at Island Cove Mini Golf located near Mansion House.
Front Desk Associate Mike is raring for golf-both kinds on the Vineyard. “I love Mink Meadows in the spring and my brother and I play at least one round of Frisbee Golf a week.” Frisbee Golf is near the Martha’s Vineyard Airport and is a well maintained 27 “rack” Frisbee Golf Course, free and popular with visitors and Islanders.
Inn Owner Sherman is an avid cyclist and loves to bike. The Vineyard hosts several bike events that he participates in, including MS Ride-the- Vineyard. This year he is going to complete the annual Cross-Island Hike hosted by the Land Bank in celebration of National Trails Day. “I’m really looking forward to being able to say I hiked across the Vineyard.”
For Inn Decorator, Susan, spring affords the chance to work at home and at Mansion House with flowers. Every May she visits the Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury for inspiration. “I love going to the arboretum at the start of the season when everything is just coming into bloom, it always gives me new ideas for my garden and the window boxes at the hotel.”
Front Desk Associate Mary enjoys taking her dog Lily for walks out to West Chop Lighthouse at sunset and then strolling down the historic neighborhood on Williams Street in Vineyard Haven where the violets are in full bloom.
Front Desk Associate Brien can be found most days wetting a line at the Edgartown fishing pier, in anticipation for the fall MV Derby. “I haven’t had too many bites yet, but a bad day on the water still beats a good day anywhere else.”
Whether it’s hiking, biking, fishing or flying horses, spring on the Island is a magical time of year.
Mansion House Health Club is upgrading with new equipment that exercises the body and the mind. The new equipment from Technogym features Visoweb interactive touchscreen displays that allow members to stay connected while exercising. The 19-inch displays track fitness goals, heart rate and distance, all in an easy to use interactive format. Visoweb also lets guests surf the web, watch TV, check emails and connect mobile devices.
New equipment includes Vario machines, a combination unit that offers a total body workout with step, elliptical and upper body exercising. The triple workout uses all the muscles in the body and can burn 200 calories in 20 minutes. Synchro elliptical units allow for zero impact Cardio workouts with no joint or muscle impact. Additional new equipment includes treadmills, stationary bikes and crossover equipment. Other great new features include flashing lights on the treadmills that signal when a user is finishing their workout for the next guest. The treadmills are also a third quieter than traditional treadmills. New stationary bikes offer gel-cushioned seats and three types of cycling configurations: traditional, city and racing. The new Crossover machine offers an enhanced workout that can burn 160 calories in twenty minutes and is ideal for skiing and skating enthusiasts.
After checking out the equipment in other clubs including Boston Sports Club and attending workshops, Fitness Director Brenda Wallis picked the Cadillac of equipment and was delighted when the health club decided to invest in the highly recommended brand.
“I thought the aesthetic design was really sleek, combined with the amazing technology,” Mrs. Wallis said, “The equipment seemed the most user friendly and well-constructed out of the many brands on the market.”
Technogym has been providing innovative fitness equipment for 25 years and was the official equipment provider of the 2006 Winter Olympics. For more information on the new Technogym equipment at Mansion House Health Club, visit www.technogym.com.
